On the Move

What is it?

The aim of On the Move (OTM) is to use Moving Image Education to develop transferable skills such as communication, leadership, confidence within young learners. OTM engages participants in a process that leads them to a stage where they can create quality moving image content through a directed programme. Emphasis is placed on collaboration and peer support to develop transferable skills to help equip participants for their next life steps. Engaging with OTM can help develop: Communication skills / Leadership skills / Problem solving skills / Increased Confidence / Media literacy / Increased cultural awareness. OTM is part funded by Scottish Screen.

On the Move session

What is Moving Image Education?

According to Scottish Screen, moving image media literacy means 'reading’ and 'writing’ moving images, understanding, enjoying and sharing them.

Moving Image Education refers to learning and teaching practices which develop moving image media literacy. These practices also provide uniquely valuable means to realise the aspirations of Scotland's new curriculum, a Curriculum for Excellence.

Scottish Screen is promoting and facilitating the development of moving image education in schools, in teacher education and training, in educational contexts outside schools, in research and resources.

Sharing Hub

As part of OTM, ULS is developing an online sharing hub for groups to share their MIE projects and content. This will enable groups to chart their progress in personal group spaces, view other groups’ work and promote themselves through personal profile pages. The sharing hub will also house the OTM ‘how to’ guide which offers a range of MIE tutorials. The hub will be launched in February 2008.

Where are we now?

The first OTM programme has just been completed with learners from Rathbone training centre. Learners have finished the programme equipped with a range of ICT skills, increased confidence and media literacy. ULS is mentoring Rathbone staff to help them sustain this approach to working with their learners. Programme two is about to begin with a new group of learners from Argyll Training Centre. The films produced on the first programme can be viewed below.

The Films

Learners worked on all aspects of the films. They worked with a range of tutors on camera handling, directing, editing, narrative and scripting over 12 weeks. Learners were hands on with everything from creating original music for the films to producing their own marketing material.

Films 1 & 2 focus on filmmaking techniques and the use of sound within moving image whereas Film 3 has a focus on narrative and storytelling.

There may be some scenes that viewers find unsettling- please remember that special techniques are used to create these effects and it is a tribute to the young people that they look so real. Some words have been used for dramatic effect.
