Big Noise
Big Noise was an 18 month project which explored how the challenges of unemployment could be overcome through creative enterprise. Participants were assisted by creative professionals in a studio environment who supported self-led progression in a variety of expertise, including Digital Sound and Image Production.
Collaborating with Reed in Partnership and funded by Department of Working Pensions, the project was housed at The Creation Zone in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.
Engagement
Local advertising generated drop-in sessions with the community, and the resulting discussions informed the structural design and teaching content of the programme. Interested participants signed up as studio members.
Deployment
Two studio phases were developed with flexible delivery frameworks and teaching content designed by creative professionals. An initial 24 week period of taster sessions exposed members to areas that they hadn’t previously considered, providing a platform for the more involved second phase. The second chapter of the project, which ran for 38 weeks, provided studio members with the opportunity to develop a range of self led projects, as well as the opportunity to work in production teams on external commissions.
Next Steps
Studio members preferred works have been compiled into a DVD which will showcase the range of work. An evaluative publication, currently in development, will document the project design process and explore the qualitative aspects of the project approach.
